2007-08 Lady Highlanders

banner.district.gif (2001 bytes)2007 - This year the Lady Highlander have a well season group of varsity players. Many have played varsity ball since their sophomore year, with one playing varsity since her freshman year. This seasoned group has played AAU ball in the off-season and turned in solid performances in a number of national tournaments.  This year's team shows great promise, building on a successful season and posting their third District title in three consecutive years. The Highlanders are back returning nine players.

Lee Piepho became the head coach of the Lady Highlanders in 1995, and has built one of the top girl's basketball programs in the state of Michigan.  Between 1995-2006 the Howell Lady Highlander record is 182-94 bringing home two Kensington Valley Conference (KVC) Championships, five District Championships, a Regional Championship and a Class "A" State Runner-Up Title. The state championship runner-up in 1996 humbly carried a 26-1 record.  The 2004 season started slow with player injuries occurring in the first game of the season. Once healthy, the Lady Highlanders went on a 13 game winning streak posting a season record of 17-6. Between 1995 and 1998, the Lady Highlanders won at least 20 games per season and were ranked in the state's top ten. The Lady Highlanders 1997 and 1998 teams were excellent teams producing Division I and Division II college players, but regular season player injuries stopped successful post season play and prevented runs for the state title. Between 1998 and 2003 Howell's teams were competitive and ranked well in the Kensington Valley Conference (KVC).

This 2005/06 season delivered a strong performance, beginning with a pre-season state ranking and concluding with the second consecutive District Title. For the second year in a row the team was young with only two seniors. This year's Lady Highlanders feature four seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and two freshman. The seniors contributed valuable minutes as part of the 2005 District Championship team. This years 2006 team finished second in the KVC, first in Districts losing only to #2 ranked Lansing Waverly, plus had 2 all staters on the team at seasons end.  Several girls won several honors see our ____ page to see list of honors.

The Lady Highlanders have always been committed to their sport and their community. They work as a team on and off the court contributing to the community through a variety of community service projects and volunteering their time to lead Saturday morning basketball clinics for elementary and middle school young women interested in learning the sport. The Lady Highlanders appreciate the support of the student and adult fans and welcome community members and others to enjoy Howell Lady Highlander Basketball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during August, September, October and November.

Coaches Note:  Girl's basketball starting in 2007/2008 is a winter sport in Michigan.
